Aqua Zumba!

A few weeks ago, I got a facebook invite to join Zumba with Adrienne Thoman as she taught her very first Aqua Zumba class ever. She got certified a few weeks prior and was doing a free demo class at Central Penn College halfway between work and my house. To say I was excited would be an understatement.

Only one issue, I had to get someone at work to switch me shifts because this class started at 6pm and I normally work until 7:30pm. Thankfully I do work with some great ladies and I was able to switch and get off at 4:30pm. As soon as it got approved, I message Adrienne and RSVPed for this event. I would definitely switch again for this class. Adrienne is such a fun loving person OUTSIDE of Zumba and even more so in a class.

While it was a small group and I have never met any of them before in my life, I had a great time. Adrienne was so open to our feedback as doing Zumba in the water is SO different than on a gym floor with sneakers. The huge challenge for her was making sure she didn't go too fast for us, which I would definitely say worked well for the most part. There were a few parts of 2 songs that were a little challenging with turns and timing but that's the fun of doing something totally new. Adrienne really did a great job especially for her first time out and I am so excited that I got the pleasure to join in on her first ever Aqua Zumba class. The only challenges I had mostly centered around being really short. You see, the most shallow part of the pool was 4' and well.... when you top out at 5'1" this doesn't give you much extra space above water. We all kind of squeezed to the front and back of the pool to make it work. I also think next time I would definitely wear water shoes for extra grip and ease on the floor.

I have said it before and will repeat myself again. I really love this experience and am so glad I got to try it out. I have never done any exercise class in the water and could definitely feel the fatigue in my muscles from the water resistance.

I really miss the social aspect of group classes like Zumba since changing jobs and to non-traditional working hours. The classes I went to were at 5:30 and 6:30 on Tuesdays at a place that is now closed anyway, but I really hope to get back to at least one group class per week at some point soon. I really need to check out our local parks and rec and get into something again.

Have you ever tried aqua zumba? What is your favorite group class to take?

  1. I have never done zumba, much less aqua zumba! I didn't even know that there was such a thing!

I'd totally have the same "shorty" problem...I top out at 4'11". :)
